We all know that the world is turning more digital than ever before. Especially since the pandemic, we’re online more than ever, and our expectations of online services is higher than ever. In 2020, 4.4 million businesses were started. That’s a 26.9% increase from 2019, and the highest growth in over a decade. With the sea of competition growing ever larger, you need to find a way to ensure your business stands out. There’s one thing that you absolutely MUST HAVE to accomplish that – a functioning, inviting, mobile-friendly website.
“Nahh, I think I can get by okay without a great website, Katie. I’ll just tell them to go onto my desktop version!” Oh really? Get this – 57% of internet users say they won’t recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile website. And 85% of adults think that a company’s mobile website should be as good or better than the desktop version. Got your attention now? Let’s continue. 😉
Creating and launching a website can be really unnerving and vulnerable. Whether you hire a designer, buy a template, or DIY it, there’s hours and hours of time that goes into each paragraph, photo, and icon. It’s a lot of work and a lot of thought. And don’t even get me started on the stress calories you eat along the way! (Lookin’ at you Ben & Jerry. Love you. Hate you.)
After all that work, you’d be surprised to learn that many website platforms still don’t have completely mobile-friendly capabilities. Many website builders only allow you to design on desktop, leaving their system to do guesswork on how to translate that website into a mobile version. The results aren’t always good. Bad cropping, text misalignment, and incorrect order are just some of the issues that often come up. And it’s SO. FRUSTRATING. I mean come on, mobile accounts for more than 50 percent of web traffic! We need to “wow” each and every one of your new instagram followers who click on the link in bio. It’s safe to say that your mobile website should never be an afterthought.
So this begs the question –
Answer: Find a platform that allows you to design specifically for mobile. If you’re hiring a designer, be sure to ask them which platform they are most comfortable using and about their process for designing a website that is mobile-friendly. If you’re choosing a template or looking to DIY, do your research and choose a website builder that will allow you to design your mobile website exactly how you want it. Should you find you’re having trouble, you may be able to hire a designer or developer to make sure your mobile website is just as dazzling as your desktop version.
